about thoughtcrime ink

thoughtcrime ink is a non-profit, anti-capitalist apparel collective. So just what is an anti-capitalist organization doing selling t-shirts, anyway? Through sales of our activist- and politically-themed products that are union printed, “sweatshop free,” and US/Canadian made, we hope to create a significant self-sustaining fund for activist groups. All profits from the sale of thoughtcrime ink merch go directly to grassroots groups in Edmonton that are actively working towards a better tomorrow.

In this spirit, we offer politicized shirts with moods that range from the sublime to the militant to the bitterly hilarious. If you are concerned about your community, your world or the planet, we hope that at least one of our shirts appeal to you. When you are committed enough to express your dreams, discontent, and solidarity, it gives others the confidence to speak out as well. The world, regardless of how vicious it can be, is still a very interesting place to walk, bike or bus around in. Why not turn your stroll into a subversive act?

One of our community goals has been to raise $5,000 annually for Anarchist Bookfairs across Canada, such as the one in our own city, Edmonton Anarchist Bookfair, and similar grassroots community projects. Anarchist Bookfairs bring together political organizers from all over Alberta with booksellers, writers, performers, educators and activists around North America and beyond, for three days in discussion and workshops pertaining to making social change happen in our communities. You can read about our fundraising successes here. We’re a volunteer-run collective, so it actually contributes a significant amount to bookfairs to purchase a single, $20-or-so shirt.

Our second goal this year is to broaden the themes of our apparel to other themes (such as anti-racist / ecological / queer / anti-sexist themes), in voices that are funny, provocative, optimistic and beautiful. We’re looking for your help, as we often like people’s ideas better than our own! Please consider entering the design competition/co-operation if you’ve got some ideas and are a designer (or can collaborate with one). Perhaps this will be the beginning of a new community around politically radical design, egging and encouraging each other on. We hope that you can participate!

In solidarity,
Jeff, Christian, Rob, and Dave
